DEAR TABBY

DEAR TABBY:  I know that people can win awards for their roles in movies and television, but are there such awards for animal actors for their winning performances?  STARSTRUCK IN SALINA.

DEAR STARSTRUCK:  What a great question, and I'll just "let the cat out of the bag" right now.  To answer your first question, the "Oscar" equivalent to animal actors was the PATSY Award, which stood for Picture Animal Top Star of the Year, which was awarded from 1951 to 1986.  Orangey, a reddish-orange tabby cat, was the only feline to win twice!  He won for his debut as the title role in the movie Rhubarb, and again for his role as Cat in the movie "Breakfast at Tiffany's.  Just so you won't think I'm being stubborn as a you-know-what, I have to admit that the first PATSY was given to Molly (a mule) in Francis the Talking Mule in 1951, and Molly also won a second time in Francis Goes to the Races.  She also had a record and comic books!  Another double winner was Terry (a Cairn Terrier dog) who played Toto in The Wizard of Oz.  Of course, there were several second and third place awards given, as well.

Let me just add that two other good cat-starring movies are That Darn Cat! (original made in 1965, and the remake in 1997) and The Cat from Outer Space (1978).  These two movies are the "cat's pajamas!"

You have got to watch THE FUNNIEST VIDEO of a dog talking with his owner!  Yes, a dog.  I tried to find a funnier one with a cat, but no luck: http://youtu.be/nGeKSiCQkPw
